History wrapped in mystery

Look, out in The Woodlands - it’s a cloister, it’s a house partly built… actually, we don’t know. There’s a rumour this bluestone structure at 26 Winona Road, currently on the market with RT Edgar, was hand-built by a past owner who abandoned the project when he caught his wife er… not being faithful. Current owner, Daniel, purchased the property with what he believes was a travertine floor in the cloisters added by subsequent owners. It’s now surrounding a spa pool which somehow gives the cheating ex story a “wah wah” quality.

The house on the property is architecturally-designed with a reverential quality defined by a cathedral ceiling and a considered use of glass delivering peekaboo views to magnificently-landscaped gardens. It’s very of its time with a view to the future in the planting of grand trees and decorative plants surrounding the blue stone structure.

The blue stone cloisters itself has multiple window-openings as well as three distinct entrances and an imposing fireplace that appears incomplete. Was it a gesture of love, a passion project killed by deceit? A dream home abandoned by a lack of will, illness or resources? We’re as keen to find out as the vendors of this fascinating property.

It’s human-scale at roughly 30m x 30m, so would it have been the beginnings of a love-letter to the builder’s wife? Was a second storey ever planned? Or what it a garden feature as it is today? Get a better look at the structure and the home currently listed for sale with RT Edgar.

We’d love to hear from you if you know anything about the property or the bluestone structure. Or even the home itself. LLME has reached out to a number of owners of bluestone homes in Mount Eliza and we look forward to bringing you a story of one of these homes in the coming weeks.
